BEETHOVEN 9

Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 with chorus & soloists

Thank you to our concert sponsor, Sam & Coralie Wai, for making this Masterworks possible.

The final Masterworks concert of the 2026–2027 season closes with one of the most influential works ever written, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. The symphony permanently expanded the possibilities of the genre by introducing vocal soloists and a large chorus into a symphonic framework. Written while Beethoven was completely deaf, the Ninth sets Friedrich Schiller’s An die Freude in its final movement, bringing together orchestra, soloists, and chorus in a work of unprecedented scale and ambition. This performance features a large chorus of local singers alongside the orchestra and soloists, bringing the season to a powerful conclusion.

Across the symphony, Beethoven moves through an extraordinary range of sound and character, from tension and urgency to reflection and affirmation. Motives return and evolve, building expectation over the course of the work until they give way to the familiar melody of Ode to Joy. More than two centuries after its premiere, the Ninth remains a defining symphonic work, and an unforgettable way to bring the season to a close.
