FROM MUSIC DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER ZIMMERMAN:
In this program the orchestra shines a spotlight on the wonderfully diverse and exceptional talent of our own musicians, as well as highlighting the musical achievements of our student players of the F-M Area Senior High Youth Symphony (FMAYS).
Every piece exemplifies our exceptional local talent!
We open each half with tour de force fanfares for FMSO's brass and percussion sections by the American composer Joan Tower. In Shostakovich’s technically brilliant and sparkling Festive Overture, FMAYS young instrumentalists sit alongside their mentors and professional counterparts of the FMSO. Poulenc’s fun, and often downright hilarious, Concerto for 2 Pianos features on piano both Jay Hershberger and Tyler Wottrich, two integral members of the orchestra in their own right, as well as accomplished solo artists and professors of piano at Concordia and NDSU respectively.
Our trumpeters Tom Strait and Jeremy Brekke give voice to John Adams short and seductive Tromba lontana (Distant Trumpets) as their solos gently soar above the colorful wash of the orchestra. As a culmination to our concert, the orchestra will perform The Red Violin for orchestra and violin by the acclaimed American composer John Corigliano. This riveting music, in equal measure heartbreakingly beautiful and fiercely dramatic with vivid orchestral effects, shows the unmatched musical and virtuosic skills of our new concertmaster Sonja Bosca-Harasim.
