This concert season we celebrate the soul of the orchestra, the VIOLIN. Called by some the most perfect instrument, the violin intoxicates our senses with its expressive range, exquisite sound, brilliant virtuosity and sheer beauty. We also celebrate two remarkable violinists: our own concertmaster Benjamin Sung, who will be featured twice this season — in John Corigliano’s music from the film “The Red Violin” and Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” — and international star MIDORI.
Once the most famous child prodigy of her generation, today Midori is a world-famous touring artist who is also passionate about music education. Midori chooses only two orchestras per year, through an extremely competitive process, for a residency. The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, together with the Fargo-Moorhead Area Youth Symphonies, was selected by Midori this year, which is a singular honor and accomplishment for both orchestras. She will not only perform as a soloist with both orchestras, but will also teach master classes for youth and adult violinists, coach chamber ensembles, visit area schools, and speak to our community in public forums and events.
Midori's concerts and activities in the Fargo-Moorhead area are part of her Orchestra Residencies Program, a collaborative project which aims to strengthen the ties of the American youth orchestra to its local professional orchestra, as well as to bolster relationships with performers, staff, and the community at large.
